The Palestinian Mission in the United Kingdom held a symbolic flag-raising ceremony in London on Monday, marking the UK’s official recognition of Palestinian statehood. The event followed Sunday’s announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the UK now formally acknowledges Palestine as a sovereign state.
The recognition places the UK alongside other nations like Australia and Canada, who have also recently extended formal recognition to the State of Palestine. The move comes just ahead of this week’s United Nations General Assembly, where global attention is expected to focus on the situation in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Husam Zomlot, the head of the Palestinian mission in London, welcomed the decision as a historic and necessary correction. “This recognition helps undo historical injustices and affirms Palestine’s right to equality, sovereignty, and self-determination,” he said on Sunday.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that the recognition is part of a broader effort to support a viable two-state solution and to push for lasting peace in the region. “In light of the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the ongoing military campaign by the Israeli government, we must act,” Starmer said. “Recognizing the State of Palestine is a crucial step toward renewing hope for both Palestinians and Israelis.”
The UK’s decision is especially significant given its historical involvement in the region, particularly its role in the events leading to the establishment of modern-day Israel following World War II.
